Czech and Slovak adolescents in cyberspace (final report)

Method: - Internet Use Questionnaire (IUQ; Považanová, Dolejš, & Suchá, 2020): - Identifies how adolescents use the Internet and related social networks (social networking, computer gaming, and acting in cyberspace). - self-constructed questionnaire - method contains 28 items - individual or group administration lasting 5-10 minutes - includes, for example, the following questions: Do you adopt the opinions of influencers (youtubers/instagrammers etc.)? On average, how many hours a day do you spend actively on social media during the working day? Do you ever get provoked on social media? Research sample: The research project involves Czech and Slovak adolescents aged 11-19 who attend the second grade of primary schools (ŽS and G) and secondary schools (G, SŠ, SOU). The research sample consists of 2,134 girls and 1,607 boys. Results: - the average number of social networks is 5.08; some have dozens of accounts; - only 2.24% of all Slovak and Czech adolescents surveyed do not have a profile on social networks; - 39.34% of girls and boys surveyed take the opinions of influencers (youtubers/instagrammers etc.); - for 11.39% of adolescents it is important to have a lot of likes and for 12.68% of girls and boys it is important to have a lot of followers; - the main social networks of adolescents are Instagram, Facebook, and Youtube; - age of first social networks - for the whole group 10.60 years (SD +- 2.04) - 61.87% of adolescents have social network profiles where they are not connected to family members (girls have fewer of these accounts than boys) - watching videos degrading human or animal dignity or life for entertainment - 26.40% - shares things with inappropriate content 10.37% - does something on the internet that parents would not be proud of - 37.12% (girls around 30% and boys around 47%) - 15.74% of parents always know what their children are doing online on the internet Internet on weekdays : 11-year-old 2.48 hours - 19-year-old 5.81 hours Active on the social network on weekdays: 11-year-old 1.76 hours - 19-year-old 3.20 hours Playing computer games on weekdays: 11-year-old 1.40 hours - 19-year-old 1.10 hours.
