The Illinois Bully Scale (IBS), which captures both victim and bully roles in adolescents, was used to assess bullying. As the method has not been adapted into the Czech language, we first back-translated the scale using 6 independent translators, then, researchers subsequently conducted a content analysis, and an English translator subsequently revised the final version of the scale. Basic questions on socio-demographic data such as age, gender, type of school, etc., were also inserted at the beginning of the questionnaire. The scale was pilot-tested and its final version was included in our longitudinal project. The method IBS consists of 18 items that verify the occurrence of a given form of experienced or realized bullying in the last 30 days. It is therefore an effective tool for capturing current problems, which can then be responded to with interventions.
The respondent selects a response on a five-point scale ranging from “never”, “1 or 2 times”, “3 or 4 times”, “5 or 6 times” to “7 or more times”. It therefore works with an expression of how often the risk manifestation occurs and therefore what is its severity. The scale is divided into 3 subscales that reflect the attitude of the victim (4 items), the bully (9 items) and the fight (5 items). Total and subscale scores are calculated by summing the relevant items.
